I’m HomeBeaufort Waterfront and the Meka II”

"I'm Home"-Beaufort Waterfront and the Meka II Painting by Beaufort Artist Mary Warshaw - Limited Edition Giclee Prints Available

“I feel as if I’m actually ON my ship in the painting and I’m arriving back into port after a long journey,” —he hesitated, looking long at the painting and thinking—“and I’m Home.” This was the reaction of Captain Horatio Sinbad when he first saw his ship, the Meka II, portrayed in this painting by Beaufort artist Mary Warshaw.

The Meka II, launched in 1967, was built by Captain Horatio Sinbad.  The ship is a 54', half-scale replica of a 17th century, two-masted pirate brigantine armed with six cannons.

Of the painting and the process of creating it, Warshaw said, "this painting came 'through me.' Many miracles happened as I painted. That is why those who see it are touched—connecting to something bigger than me or even the painting itself."

The original painting is now in the collection of a local resident who has roots dating back to Beaufort’s first settlers.

The artist gratefully acknowledges assistance with structural details in photographs taken by Scott Taylor and James Piver.
